Printable Word Scramble Puzzles

A word scramble gives you a word with its letters mixed up, like NIART for TRAIN or HCAPE for PEACH, and you write the real word on the line beside it. Our printable word scramble puzzles have 6 everyday words per page, all on one theme that's printed at the top as a hint, with the jumbled letters in big, bold, well-spaced type. How a word scramble works

1. Read the theme at the top of the page, for example Soups and Salads or Mountain Views. Every word on the page fits it.
2. Look at the first set of mixed-up letters.
3. Rearrange them in your head (or on scrap paper) until they spell a real word that fits the theme.
4. Write the word on the line next to it.

Every word on our pages is 5 to 9 letters long and uses each scrambled letter exactly once.

What our word scramble pages look like

• 6 words per page, numbered, one per row.
• Big scrambled letters, bold and spaced apart, at 34 point, so you can see each letter on its own.
• A writing line beside each word, with room for your answer.
• A theme hint at the top of the page.
• Plain instructions in at least 18 point.
• Black on white, set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for clear, easy reading.

Tips for unscrambling

1. Use the theme. If the theme is Soups and Salads and you see six letters, think of soup and salad things first: ONION, CELERY, TOMATO.
2. Find the common pairs. Letter pairs like TH, CH, SH, ER, ING and ED often go together. Spot them and the rest falls into place.
3. Start or end with a likely letter. Try putting an S, T, C or B at the start, or an E, Y or S at the end.
4. Write the letters in a circle. On scrap paper, arrange the letters in a ring. Breaking the original order often makes the word jump out.
5. Skip and come back. Solve the easy ones first. Fewer leftover words make the last ones easier to guess from the theme.
6. Check the answer key at the back of the pack if one has you stumped.

How to print them clearly

• Paper: US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches). Ordinary copy paper is fine.
• Scale: Actual size or 100% in your print window, so the letters stay full size.
• A4 paper: Choose Fit to page. It will print a little smaller.
• Quality: "Normal," not "Draft."
• Color: Black and white is all you need.

Checked before it reaches you

Our software builds each scramble and then checks it with a separate program:

• each scramble uses exactly the letters of its answer, no more and no fewer,
• no scramble is printed in the correct order by accident, and
• every answer is worked out again from the puzzle and matched to the answer key.

When we pick the words, we only use ones whose letters don't spell any other word in a large English word list (about 150,000 words), so the answer key matches the word we had in mind.
