Large Print Number Puzzles for Adults

Our number puzzles for adults come in three kinds: number pyramids, missing-number sums and number patterns. Each one is a full US Letter page with large, bold digits and boxes to write your answers in. They need only everyday arithmetic, mostly adding and subtracting. Every monthly Large Print Puzzle Club pack includes one page of each, with the answers at the back.

The three number puzzles

Number pyramids

Each pyramid is a stack of boxes, 4 boxes along the bottom and 1 at the top. Every box holds the sum of the two boxes just below it. A few boxes are filled in; you work out the rest. Every number in the bottom row is from 1 to 9. Each page has two pyramids.

How to start: look for a box whose two lower neighbors are both known, and add them. Or, if you know a box and one of the two below it, subtract to find the other. For example, if a box shows 15 and the box below it on the left shows 6, the box below it on the right must be 9.

Our software checks that each pyramid has exactly one answer. That means the bottom row can be worked out from the clues given, with no guessing.

Missing numbers

A page of 10 short sums, each with one number missing and an empty box in its place, such as:

☐ + 32 = 53 · 44 − ☐ = 30

Find the missing number and write it in the box. Most sums use adding or subtracting with numbers up to 100. Now and then you'll see a small multiplication, using numbers from 2 to 9.

Number patterns

Six rows of numbers, each following its own rule. Work out the rule and write the next two numbers in the boxes. For example, in 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, … each number is 4 more than the one before, so the next two are 46 and 50.

The rules are things like:

  • add or subtract the same amount each time,
  • double or triple each time, or
  • add an amount that grows by the same step each time (for example +1, +3, +5, +7).

What makes them large print

  • Big digits. Numbers on these pages are printed at about 30 to 34 point, bold, and every number is at least 24 point.
  • Boxes to write in that are big enough for a comfortable pencil answer.
  • Short, plain instructions in at least 18 point at the top of each page.
  • Black on white, with no color or shading.

Tips

  1. Do the easy boxes first. In a pyramid, fill every box you can get by adding before you try subtracting.
  2. Check by working backward. For a missing-number sum, put your answer in and read the whole sum again.
  3. Write the differences. For a number pattern, write the gap between each pair of numbers above the row. The rule usually jumps out.
  4. Use a pencil and scrap paper for working out. There's room on the page, but scrap paper keeps it tidy.

How to print them clearly

  • Paper: US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches).
  • Scale: Actual size or 100% in your print window.
  • A4 paper: Choose Fit to page. It will print a little smaller.
  • Quality: "Normal," not "Draft," so the digits print solid black.
  • Color: Black and white is all you need.

Checked before it reaches you

Our software builds every number puzzle, and a separate program then works out each answer again from the puzzle itself and checks it against the answer key. Each pyramid is also checked to have exactly one answer.

In every pack

Each monthly pack has 32 puzzles, including 4 number puzzle pages: 2 number pyramids pages, 1 missing-numbers page and 1 number patterns page. The rest of the pack is large print word searches, large print sudoku, mazes and word scrambles. If you enjoy number puzzles, sudoku is a good next step: it uses logic rather than arithmetic.

Number puzzle questions

What kinds of number puzzles are in a pack?

Three: number pyramids, missing-number sums and number patterns. Every monthly pack includes all three (2 pyramids pages, 1 missing-numbers page and 1 patterns page). The gift pack and each bonus pack have one page of each.

How hard is the math?

Everyday arithmetic. The missing-number sums use adding and subtracting with numbers up to 100, plus an occasional small multiplication (numbers from 2 to 9). Some number patterns double or triple, so those numbers can climb into the hundreds or thousands. There's no algebra and no fractions.

Do you make number searches?

No. Our number puzzles are pyramids, missing-number sums and number patterns. For a search-style puzzle, try our large print word searches.

Can I use a calculator?

Of course. It's your puzzle. Most people find the sums easy to do in their head or on scrap paper.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The answer key at the back of each pack fills in every box.

How do number pyramids work?

Every box is the sum of the two boxes just below it. Use the numbers you're given to add upward or subtract downward until every box is filled. The bottom row uses only the numbers 1 to 9.
