Large Print Sudoku Puzzles

Our large print sudoku puzzles fill a whole US Letter page: a standard 9 × 9 grid with boxes about three-quarters of an inch wide and numbers printed at 36 point, black on white. Every puzzle is checked by software to have exactly one solution, and each comes in easy or medium. Each monthly Large Print Puzzle Club pack includes 6 of them (3 easy, 3 medium), with the answers at the back.

What our large print sudoku look like

  • One puzzle per page. The grid uses most of the page, instead of four or six small grids squeezed onto one sheet.
  • Big numbers. Given numbers are printed at 36 point.
  • Roomy boxes. Each box is about ¾ inch across, so there's space to write your answer, and even to pencil small "maybe" numbers in a corner.
  • Clear 3 × 3 boxes. Thicker lines mark each 3 × 3 box so the sections stand out.
  • Plain instructions in at least 18 point at the top of every page, plus the level (easy or medium).
  • Black on white, set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for clear, easy reading.

How to play sudoku

The grid has 9 rows, 9 columns and nine 3 × 3 boxes. Some squares already have numbers. Your job is to fill every empty square with a number from 1 to 9 so that:

  • every row has each number from 1 to 9 exactly once,
  • every column has each number from 1 to 9 exactly once, and
  • every 3 × 3 box has each number from 1 to 9 exactly once.

You never need to do arithmetic. The numbers are just symbols. It's all about where each one can go.

Easy and medium: what's the difference?

Our software only keeps a puzzle if it can be finished by plain logic, one square at a time, with no guessing.

  • Easy puzzles start with more numbers filled in (about 40 of the 81 squares). You can solve every one by finding squares that have only one possible number left.
  • Medium puzzles start with fewer numbers (about 33). Sometimes you'll also need a second idea: spotting the only place in a row, column or box where a particular number can still go.

Every monthly pack has 8 sudoku: 4 easy and 4 medium. The gift pack and each bonus pack have 3 easy and 3 medium, and the free sampler has 2 easy puzzles.

Solving tips

  1. Scan for the busiest row, column or box. The one with the most numbers already filled in usually has a square you can finish right away.
  2. Check one number at a time. Pick a number, say 5, and look at every box. Where can a 5 still go?
  3. Write small "maybe" numbers. If a square could be a 3 or an 8, write both small in the corner. The large print boxes have room for this.
  4. Use a pencil with a good eraser. Mistakes happen to everyone.
  5. When you're stuck, change direction. If rows aren't helping, try columns, then boxes.
  6. Check the answer key at the back of the pack when you're done, or when you need a nudge.

Checked to have exactly one solution

A poorly made sudoku can have two or more correct answers, or none at all. That can leave you stuck for reasons that aren't your fault. Before any pack goes out, a separate checking program counts the solutions to every sudoku and rejects any puzzle that doesn't have exactly one. It also checks that the answer key matches the puzzle.

How to print sudoku at full size

  • Paper: US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches).
  • Scale: Choose Actual size or 100% in your print window, so the boxes stay about ¾ inch wide.
  • A4 paper: Choose Fit to page. It will print a little smaller.
  • Quality: "Normal" rather than "Draft," so the grid lines print solid.
  • Print extra copies: If a puzzle gets messy with erasing, print a fresh copy of that page and start again. You can print any page as often as you like for yourself and your household.

Sudoku and more in every pack

Each monthly pack has 32 puzzles across five kinds: sudoku plus word searches, mazes, word scrambles and number puzzles. Every puzzle set in 18-point type or larger. If you like numbers, the number puzzles (pyramids, missing-number sums and number patterns) are a nice change from sudoku.
